AWARD
WINNING SECONDARY EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP
Through the Waco I.S.D. Adopt-A-School program, LTrek®
adopted G.W. Carver Academy, a science and technology magnet
school in Waco, Texas. In 2008 LTrek was awarded
“Outstanding Partnership” by Waco I.S.D. and the Greater
Chamber of Commerce for the leadership development program
it developed and implemented at Carver during the 2007-2008
school year. This program is based off of LTrek Everest™,
one of LTrek’s Seven Leadership Summits™. All students who
enter Carver are on a “Leadership Trek” and meet with LTrek®
volunteers as sixth, seventh and eighth graders learning
core leadership competencies through games and activities.

TRANSITION
CAMP FOR ENTERING STUDENTS
Fifth graders entering the sixth grade begin at “Base Camp”
at an LTrek Transition Camp where they prepare for school
and learn everything they need to know to feel confident the
first day of school.

GOAL SETTING AND WRITING
A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
During the second semester of the sixth grade year, students
reach Camp One and build a compass and write personal
mission statements that help to guide future decision
making.

TEAMBUILDING
SKILLS
Seventh graders learn teambuilding skills through games and
activities for better group project management skills at
Camp Two. Also, selected seventh graders participate in
the peer mediation program maintained by LTrek, through
which students learn conflict resolution skills and how to
resolve conflict among their classmates.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLLS
The expedition continues in the eighth grade when students
learn about the virtue of courage, and continual leadership
training through professional skills sessions (i.e. managing
resources, job interview tips, etc.) The courses correlate
with Camp Three and Camp Four along the path to the summit
of Mt. Everest. Additionally, selected eighth graders are
the strength of the peer mediation program at Carver. When
students complete their eighth grade year, this equals their
LTrek Carver summit, virtually of course. The first class
to completely go through this program will summit in 2010.
LTrek® is thankful for the Baylor University Hankamer School
of Business Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) students who
volunteered their time in support of this program to further
the mission of LTrek at G.W. Carver Academy.

CONFLICT
Leadership Trek® was awarded a “Golden Apple Award” by Waco
I.S.D. and the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce in 2005 for
the Peer Mediation Program it helped initiated and continues
to maintain at G. W. Carver Academy. The program created
by The Texas Bar Association is called, “Mediators Achieving
Peace.” The successful program at Carver is now the model
program for middle schools in the city of Waco, a project of
the Waco-McLennan County Bar Association. On the right:
